ABOUT

The Barrio Etiquette Series was LaLa Speech Therapy’s 2022 winter event series geared towards improving Latinx pediatric care outcomes. Educational pláticas (conversations) are geared towards professionals who work with families in communities who have been marginalized. These events were conducted virtually in a webinar style and curated as structured and interactive lecture experiences.

What do you mean by “Latinx”?

We use Latinx in reference to peoples of Latina America. LaLa Speech Therapy has experience serving Spanish and Portuguese speaking folks. Lucía identifies as Latina and cis-gender. We use the x in Latinx at LaLa Speech Therapy to model inclusivity. We recognize that Latinx might not be in the vernacular of the people we serve, however it does offer an opportunity to expand vocabulary. In the field, we use Latine when speaking Spanish with same sex couples and older folks. Our first approach is always to ask how folks choose to identify and be sure to honor their choices without judgement.

Con Compasión: Elevate Your Early Intervention Approach with Latinx Families

Let’s face it, not all Latinx families are the same, and most do not respond to traditional intervention models. Learn how your practice can strategically align with the Latinx families and clients you serve. Join us as we create a new narrative for professionals serving Latinx families in early intervention.

Take It Outside: Inviting Nature to Your Practice

Have you ever taken a walk with your client in their barrio? Why or why not? In this plática we will explore what prevents communities who have been marginalized from being nourished by the natural space that surrounds them. We invite professionals opt-in to accept, collaborate, and celebrate with the communities they serve. Participants will receive a Natural Space Audit from LaLa to take home.

¡C'mon, Vámonos!: From Theory to Práctica
Amplify your services to go beyond the limitations of archaic healthcare and education systems. We encourage pediatric professionals to get to know the communities they serve using a culturally-responsive, relationship-first approach. Let’s dismantle the individualistic and ableist models and infuse your practice with community and nature to better serve clients living in the barrio. We will offer hands-on tools to start implementing in your practice immediately. When we heal together, we thrive together.
